🏭 Quick Reference

  • ✅ Bolts only: 4 machines — wire drawing, cold heading, trimming, thread rolling
  • ✅ Bolts + nuts: 6 machines — add nut former and tapping machine
  • ✅ Full line: 8–10 machines with conveyor, assembly and optional hot nut header
  • ⚠️ Always buy pneumatic clutch type — never friction clutch
  • ⚠️ Thread rolling is your production bottleneck — invest in the best

Getting your machine selection right is the most critical decision you will make before your plant opens. Too little capacity, wrong machine type, or mismatched speeds between machines will cost you far more than buying the right machines from the start.

This guide covers every machine you need — explaining exactly what each one does, the approximate cost in 2025, and what specification to insist on.

Step 1 — Wire Drawing Machine

MS (mild steel) rods arrive with surface rust, uneven diameter and impurities. The wire drawing machine cleans the rod by acid pickling, washes it thoroughly, and draws it through hardened dies to the exact wire diameter your cold heading machine requires. This ensures consistent input material every time, which is essential for consistent bolt quality.

Cost: ₹2.5 – 5 lakh | Required: Yes

Step 2 — Cold Forge Header Machine

The heart of your plant. The cold heading machine cuts the drawn wire to bolt length and forms the bolt head in one or two powerful strokes — no heat required. The cold-forming process aligns the steel grain structure, producing a head that is stronger than one that is machined or hot-forged at the same grade.

Critical: Always Buy Pneumatic Clutch Type

Pneumatic clutch cold headers run faster (more strokes per minute), are safer (instant emergency stop), and require far less maintenance than older friction clutch machines. The price difference is worth every rupee. Samrat Machine Tools manufactures pneumatic clutch cold headers in both semi and fully automatic configurations.

Cost: ₹4 – 10 lakh | Required: Yes

Step 3 — Bolt Trimming Machine

After cold heading the bolt head is roughly circular. The trimming machine cuts it to the precise hexagonal shape. Fully automatic trimmers with conveyor feeders can run with minimal operator involvement and significantly increase daily output. For any plant above 300 kg/day output, invest in fully automatic.

Cost: ₹2 – 5 lakh | Required: Yes

💡 Match your trimmer speed to your cold header. If your cold header produces 200 bolts/minute and your trimmer can only handle 100/minute, you have created a bottleneck that wastes 50% of your heading capacity.

Step 4 — Thread Rolling Machine

Thread rolling presses threads into the bolt shank using hardened dies — it does not cut or remove material. This compression strengthens the thread by 30% compared to cut threading, produces a smoother surface, and creates threads that are more fatigue-resistant. Customers in automotive and infrastructure supply chains specifically prefer rolled-thread fasteners.

This is your production bottleneck machine. If it runs slowly or breaks down, your entire line stops. Buy the best quality thread rolling machine you can afford — with pneumatic clutch, and with a vibrator/conveyor feeder for continuous automatic bolt feeding. Samrat's high-speed thread rolling machines with conveyor and vibrator can process 3,000–6,000 bolts per hour.

Cost: ₹3 – 8 lakh | Required: Yes

Step 5 — Nut Former Machine (if making nuts)

The nut former shapes hex nut blanks from wire or rod at high speed — typically 100–300 pieces per minute depending on nut size. High-speed nut formers reduce labour dependency and deliver consistent blank quality for the tapping operation that follows.

Samrat's high-speed nut former machines are specifically engineered for rapid, precision production.

Cost: ₹3 – 7 lakh | Required: If making nuts

Step 6 — Nut Tapping Machine (if making nuts)

Tapping cuts the internal threads inside each nut blank. You need a separate tap size for every nut size you produce. Multi-spindle tapping machines process several nuts at once, dramatically increasing output. Always keep a stock of backup taps — they wear out and break regularly in high-volume production.

Cost: ₹1.5 – 3.5 lakh | Required: If making nuts

Optional Machines to Add Later

  • Long Length Conveyor Machine (₹1.5–3L) — For bolts longer than 100mm. Required if making anchor bolts or foundation bolts.
  • Hot Nut Header (₹4–9L) — For M24+ or high-tensile nuts that cannot be cold-formed.
  • Nut Bolt Assembly Machine (₹2–4L) — Automatically assembles and packs nut-bolt sets. Adds retail premium.
  • Multi-Station Bolt Maker (₹8–25L) — High-speed 2 to 5-station machines for large-volume plants with established orders.

What to Check Before Buying Any Machine

  1. Pneumatic clutch — Non-negotiable for cold headers and thread rollers.
  2. Capacity matching — All machines in your line should have matched throughput.
  3. ISO certified manufacturer — Ensures consistent quality control in production.
  4. Spare parts availability — Ask: can parts be delivered within 48 hours?
  5. Warranty — Minimum 12 months on all critical parts.
  6. Customer references — Ask to speak to existing buyers. Good manufacturers provide this readily.
